Alexander Graham Bell

Alexander Graham Bell
By:Nikita

Alexander Graham Bell was born March 3rd, 1847 in Edinburgh. He was a scientist. When he was young, sound fascinated him. At the age of 16, he started to teach, he taught music and speech, after a year of teaching, he went to university in Edinburgh and then he returned to teaching. Then at the age of 23, he went to “Boston School of Deaf Mutes” in the United States.
Bell had the idea that if a telegraph line only carried two messages at once, maybe he could invent a line that could send out 6 or 8 messages at a time. Alexander created the first telephone in 1876. Then Bell, started to teach, opening a school called “School of the Vocal Physiology and Mechanics of speech” in Boston. He had many deaf students. Bell viewed deafness as being rooted out, he also believed that with resources, plus effort, that Bell could teach the deaf to speak, and drive them away from using sign language. But Bell had no time with all the school work and private students. Bell had become a night owl, which did damage to his health, it caused him many severe headaches. Another young inventor named Thomas Edison had the same idea, so Bell always locked up his notes and equipment in a table so no one could take his information. In the fall, Bell chose to keep experimenting with sound and dropped almost all of his pupils except, Georgie Sanders and Mabel Hubbard.
He died August 2nd, 1922 at the age of 75. He died of Diabetes and pernicious anemia. He died in Nova Scotia, he was buried on top of the mountain called Beinn Bhreagh. At the end of his funereal, “every phone on the continent of North America was silenced in honor of the man who had given to mankind the means for direct communication at a distance.”

Journal Response

I am reading the book called " Uglies ". The author is Scott Westernfeld. In the chapter I have read called " Best friends forever ", one of the main characters named Tally Youngblood is an ugly. She lives in Uglyville and her best friend has turned pretty because he's 16. In the book, when you turn 16 they give you an operation that makes you look better and they let you party. They had no rules. Tally's friend Peris is a pretty and in 3 months she will turn pretty. Her and Peris were really close, but Tally has been lonely since the operation.
Everything is now high tech in this book. Tally knows how to trick the room. She put a Tally sized heater in her room and went out the window. She snuck over the bridge to New Pretty Town and searched one of the mansion's wearing a piggy mask. When she had found Peris, she was amazed on how pretty he looked. She only went there to make sure that they were still best friends forever. She asked him why she didn't write anymore, he didn't because it wasn't like him anymore. By the end of the chapter she escaped by grabbing a bungee cord and pulling the fire alarm. Everyone freaked.
If I were Tally, I wouldn't have even gone to New Pretty Town. I would have waited the 3 months. But Tally felt lonely, and I get that. Lonliness is very hard to fight.

Toronto Field Trip

Dear Journal,
On Wednesday November 3rd, the grades 7 and 8 went on a trip to Toronto. It was a lot of fun, especially when we went to the Eaton Centre.
When we boarded on the train it was 6:30 am! The train ride was at least 3 and a half hours long, so a lot of people went to sleep. There was A LOT of stops before we got to Toronto. When we arrived in Toronto, we started our journey to the "Hockey hall of fame" and walked around for about an hour. A lot of people got a picture with the Stanley cup. Shelby and I did. Then after we were done the Hockey hall of fame, we ate at some tables.
After that we walked to the wicked theatre. There was no outside food or electronics aloud inside. So we get to our seats and were way up at the TOP! The Wicked cast looked so tiny when I watched. My favourite song was " Defying Gravity" sang by Elphaba the witch. But she was innocent which was a weird twist, in the Wizard of Oz, she's evil. But people made this up, she was really caring. After a while it looked like a movie screen, but it was all live.
When the play was done, I think EVERYBODY was hungry, so we walked to the Eaton Centre for some food. My group voted on McDonald's, so we got McDonald's.
When we got done eating, we went to go do some browsing. First we went into American Eagle, then we went to HMV. After we walked all around, going into the Disney store and just looking around. We walked out of the Eaton Centre and into some sport shop. I saw some AMAZING high tops! But we only had 7 minutes so we just browsed. Then the 7 and 8's met infront of the Eaton Centre, and headed back to the train station. We boarded back on the train and waited to get back to Chatham.
I will never forget that day.... when we went to Toronto.

                                                                                                           Sincerely,

Journal Response

Dear Journal,

I am read the book " Uglies" by Scott Westerfeld. I have read the chapter called Rapids.
So far the two characters Tally and Shay have already snook over to the New Pretty town
and almost got caught. Then Shay taught Tally how to hoverboard.

Before they took off, Tally had come clean and told Shay that she
had promised her friend who was already pretty, that she wouldn't get into
trouble. Shay explained to her that maybe her Tally's friend Peris only
said that to get rid of her for a whole two months. Tally didn't want to think
that but she knew it was true. But Tally also told her that she thought if
she got in trouble they wouldn't turn her pretty.
In Rapids, they are hoverboarding in over the white river which is very nasty.
They have to wear goggles, crash bracelets and a belly sensor. They ride over the
rapids and get to the ruins which is their destination. Tally finds out that hoverboards
need metal to fly, then she is puzzled on how it can ride on the waters. Shay explains
that the earth has minerals and that the hoverboards can refer to that, but they
prefer iron. Then Shay stopps both of them and points at the clouds breaking away
and the moon shining through. Some towers shot up and casted jagged shadows.
They instantly thought " The Rusty Ruins".
I think that if I were Tally, I would have not given it a second thought and stook
with Shay, they were both turning pretty the same day, so it was alright to let loose two
months before and have a load of fun.
                                                                     Sincerely,
                                                                    Kitabear11
